DEVELOPER'S COMMENTS: This slender, square 29-story tower, rising through a series of setbacks to a sculptural penthouse and lantern, combines with attached townhouses to create a transition between the highrise residential buildings of Bay Street and the lowrise structures of the University of Toronto campus. The tower’s mass is articulated with bay windows, pilasters, cornices, and balconies that recall North America’s grand urban apartment buildings of the 1920s and 1930s. Fronting St. Thomas Street are the main lobby entrance and an opening that leads behind the building to a porte-cochere residential entrance, an underground parking entrance, and a service area. Immediately adjacent to the porte-cochere is a formal garden for residents. The townhouses make a literal scale connection to the tightly-spaced freestanding townhouses that once typified this neighborhood. The stepped top provides open terraces to the penthouse apartments. |
