| DEVELOPER’S COMMENTS: In 2002 world-renowned architect Frank Gehry was engaged to increase the Art Gallery of Ontario’s art viewing space by fifty per cent. When the Gallery re-opened to the public on November 14, 2008, it was clear that Gehry had transformed the AGO into a contemporary, history-conscious building that boasts international appeal. Since its grand opening, the transformed AGO has attracted over 300,000 visitors. Highlights of the transformed AGO include: a new Dundas street entrance aligned with Walker Court, the historic heart of the AGO; a sculpture gallery that extends 450 feet along the north side of the building, enabling visitors to see out onto Dundas Street and passers by to see into the Gallery; a sculptural staircase that soars from the second floor, linking Walker Court to the new tower for contemporary art; and the integration of glass windows throughout the building that allow visitors to experience the surrounding cityscape from inside the Gallery. |
