The Instructional Centre at University of Toronto Scarborough is the first building and a key anchor for future development as the campus extends across Military Trail. This gateway facility on a triangular-shaped site has a welcoming pedestrian plaza housing an outdoor forum with a 15-metre-high media wall for projections and events. A sense of community and access continues in the four-storey skylight atrium animated with balconies, a rooftop garden, a courtyard and a glass bridge, all of which bring natural light and landscape courts deep inside the building. The atrium also has the largest art installation commissioned by UTSC. Sightlines through the unitized curtain wall system afford panoramic views to the scenic ravine setting of the campus. Sustainable features include a green roof, high performance thermal envelope and a photovoltaic solar array system where the college can sell excess generated energy to the Ontario Power Authority. This state-of-the-art facility increases by 25 percent the overall academic space on campus in a design that gives graceful proportion to the 165,000-square-foot facility.
