The Living Life on the Avenue project is an exercise in effective urban design and infill intensification on a neighbourhood scale. The site, in an existing low-rise residential neighbourhood, originally contained a church; consequently, the design parti was to insert a modern seniors residence with all of its amenities into a volume sympathetic to the massing of the former church. With its sloped roof form, dormer windows, and stone and brick detailing, the new facility integrates a large program successfully into the existing neighbourhood. No less important for its small scale, Living Life on the Avenue represents sustainable urban design, and intensification of program and services in a particularly gentle neighbourly way.
