One of the key components for the transformation of Toronto’s Regent Park is the creation of new neighbourhood amenity spaces, fostering connected-ness and social hubs in a community where few previously existed. Daniels Spectrum provides a new home for several organizations dedicated to dance, music, visual arts, cultural and social innovation. The Spectrum is open to the public and has become a hive of creative community activity.
The building design is inspired by the cultural richness of the Regent Park Community. The colour pattern on the exterior of the building is extracted from the colours of the flags of the world and identifies the building as a space for creative endeavor.
As Canada’s largest and oldest public housing project evolves into mixed-use, market and rent-geared-to-income housing, Daniels Spectrum becomes a new cultural hub, not only for the immediate community but for the entire city. It serves to break down misconceptions about a neighbourhood in transition and introduces people to the area, many for the first time.
