Two Gladstone is designed to complement the historic neighboring Gladstone Hotel and provide a sensitive response to the demand for intensification in the area. The architects sought to acknowledge the historic hotel without overshadowing it. The form, proportions, and materiality take cues from The Gladstone Hotel without being overtly referential or pastiche. The massing acknowledges the tower of The Gladstone Hotel by stepping back and freeing up the south-east corner of the site. Freeing this corner allows the hotel to assert its prominence as an iconic part of the of the Queen West streetscape. Cornice lines and brickwork respond to the scale and materiality of the historic buildings along Queen Street West, continuing a consistent rhythm on the street front. Two Gladstone’s sensitive contextual response, articulate design, and success in providing high quality space for the community and occupants, make it a benchmark of high quality residential development.
