Streetcar’s adjacent 2 Gladstone project used the Gladstone Hotel as its primary design influence, and reinterprets its proportion, materiality and scale. The design of 8 Gladstone extends the vitality of Queen street north along Gladstone. The historical cornice lines and brick piers of the Hotel are translated into contemporary architecture. Regular inset balconies and French balconies alternate to create a continuous streetwall. Multiple building setbacks create terraces on various levels, with views towards downtown; generous balconies create an extension of personal indoor living space and create a connection to the neighbourhood. A unique feature of the project is the integration of urban laneways that create a pedestrian scale and emphasize the building’s integration with the local neighbourhood. These laneways will be the main access to a variety of retail spaces in the future making them an animated destination in themselves.
