The design of Bridgepoint Active Healthcare incorporates the therapeutic benefits of natural light, access to nature and views of the surrounding park and city to create a supportive environment for health and wellness. The intent is to inspire patients, caregivers and staff to feel connected to the world outside. In addition to large horizontal windows, the number and placement of pop out vertical windows equals the number of patient beds and ensures everyone has a view.
The distinction between public and private space is deliberately blurred to foster community engagement. Features include a large urban porch with a café, a therapy pool with picture windows on the park, an expansive green roof terrace, a meditative labyrinth, and park trail extensions through the hospital campus. The former Don Jail (1864) was restored and repurposed as the hospital administrative building with interpretive displays and open to the public for the first time.
