About the Project

The new Forensic Services and Coroner’s is one of only three forensic facilities of its kind in the world. The new facility is seen as a catalyst for the revitalization of the former Provincial campus located at the intersection Wilson Ave and Downsview Drive. The relationship between the complex, the city and neighbourhood achieves a careful balance of form and function, safety and security, present and future flexibility.

Expressed as three distinct masses - Podium, Laboratory and Office Blocks - the articulated complex relates in mass and character to its neighbourhood. The podium utilizes extensive transparency in public areas at grade to achieve community connection. The library component, a key public function, is given prominence as an articulated glass box within the elevation. A light filled atrium separates the lab and office blocks. This ‘Forensics Commons’ provides necessary collaborative space within this highly secure program.
