The design for this 410 pupil place replacement school on a very small 1.196 hectare (2.95 acre) urban site placed a high priority on the relationship between the building and the street and neighbouring properties and with the creation of a series of defined exterior spaces for play, landscape and for community gathering.
The mass of the building is articulated as masonry elements connected by a Library feature and clear building entrance visible from the street and the Evergreen influenced playground areas. This approach to building and site design results in an integrated project that connects between interior and exterior programme elements at multiple locations; for example, the multi-purpose space in front of the school that is defined by the building, new landscape features and existing mature trees.
Materials were selected for durability, character and to distinguish truly public elements from less public areas of the school.
