DEVELOPER'S COMMENTS:
Set within three interconnected historic University of Toronto buildings, two of which face St. George Street with the third reaching back toward the rear of the site, The Department of Economics’ primary objective was to expand current facilities, as well as to revitalize the department and to significantly enhance the department’s architectural presence on the St George campus. In order to solve this complex problem, a series of additions around, and some selective interventions within the existing buildings, are intended to provide the department with more unity and coherence, increase collegiality and make the department more accessible to students. The additions include offices, a central gathering space, a resource centre, research spaces, new meeting rooms and graduate and faculty lounges. As offices are required in the basement to accommodate the program, the north addition has been raised to match floor levels with the existing Victorian house and provides natural light into the lower levels of the department.
