DEVELOPER'S COMMENTS:
In the context of West One, comprising a full city block at the south-west corner of Spadina and Bremner, two glass towers of 49 and 40 storeys provide the skyline signature while the Gallery carries the overall urban theme of the development and provides a sensitively scaled edge to the City streets and landscaped courtyard it frames. The Gallery comprises eight storeys, with a retail base, along Spadina, and four storeys along Bremner. Its horizontal expression contrasts with the verticality of the glass towers that flank it. Robust, industrial canopies of galvanized steel shelter a series of shopfronts along both streets, and provide a sense of urbanity. On the courtyard side, strong horizontality is replaced by a more serene glass skin in the West One palette of blue greys. This treatment de-materializes the bulk of The Gallery and focuses attention on a series of two storey, brick and stone townhouse fronts, articulated with canopies, galvanized steel and wood screens. The Gallery, although in context a small building, manages to carry the theme of this large project, with its tough outer skin, its soft inner skin, and the art installations by Chilean artist Francisco Gazitua, which provide linkage and continuity throughout the project.
